Citral

Strong, fresh lemon and lemongrass.

Where it comes from

The main component of lemongrass and litsea cubeba oils; also present in lemon.

How perfumers use it

Gives “lemon” its character. Unstable in alcohol and soap, so used carefully.

Did you know? Lemon oil is mostly limonene, which smells faint; just a few percent of citral makes it smell like lemon.

Safety & regulation

EU-labelled allergen; restricted by IFRA.

For education only. Raw materials should be diluted for smelling and never applied neat to skin. Always follow the supplier’s safety data sheet and the current IFRA Standards.
