1. What do they wear now?
Look at their dresser or ask a friend. Stay in the same scent family as something they already love and you can’t go far wrong.
2. Daytime or evening?
Fresh, citrus and floral scents suit daytime and warm weather; amber, woody and oud suit evenings, events and winter.
3. How bold are they?
Someone with a quiet style will usually prefer a skin scent or a soft musk; someone who loves attention may enjoy oud, tuberose or a rich gourmand.
4. Perfume or something for the home?
Candles and reed diffusers are safer when you don’t know their taste, and they are lovely for housewarmings, weddings and teachers.
5. When in doubt, give choice
A set of 5ml testers, a build-your-own gift box or a gift card lets them discover their own favourite. Add a handwritten note: it is often the part people remember.
