Where it comes from
A waxy substance from the digestive system of sperm whales that floats at sea for years, oxidising in sun and salt water. Used as a tincture.
How perfumers use it
Historically a precious fixative. Today almost always recreated with Ambroxan and similar molecules.
Did you know? Fresh ambergris smells unpleasant; only years of ageing at sea make it fragrant.
Safety & regulation
